Playground Leaders is a scheme that aims to increase the amount of physical activity undertaken during break and lunch times in schools and reduce the amount of anti-social behaviour. Carefully selected pupils are called Playground Leaders who receive training to enable them to be effective and confident leaders.
Pupils in Years 5 and 6 may choose to be a Playground Leader. They lead playground games with groups of children (with support from staff) and sometimes they are able to resolve conflicts. They encourage children who are reluctant to join in games to participate in organised games such as the parachute and look out for children who haven’t anyone to play with. Playground Leaders develop leadership skills and can raise self-confidence and self-esteem.
Pupils in Years 3 and 4 may choose to be a Playground Buddy. They lead playground games at playtimes.
“As a buddy we help keep children safe and happy at playtimes.”
Playground Leaders are expected to be role models for good playground behaviour.
